On this day in history 1547 Ivan the Terrible was crowned the first czar of Russia.

 

The wife of Clark Gable, actress Carole Lombard, died in a plane crash.


In the year 1920 a year after its ratification, the 18th Amendment to the Constitution which prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages, went into effect.
 

Operation Desert Storm was announced by the White House on this day in history 1991.

 

The space shuttle known as the Columbia blasted off only for the craft to break up on its descent on February 1, killing all on board in 2003.
